Day shift during turkey season STINKS!!!

Postby Double Lung on Tue May 05, 2009 10:08 pm

Monday, my season opener, I got on one that was closer to the field edge than normal, so I couldn't get between him in the tree and where he wanted to strut. He gobbled once after fly-down before I had to leave at 7:30 so I could be to work at 8:00.

This morning I got on 2 gobbling their heads off on the roost. One shut up after fly-down, and the other continued to carry on. I set up in a spot that made a good bow set-up, but only gave me a marginal chance to call him up, rather than in the spot I would have set up with a gun. He gobbled consistently as he walked right through the "gun spot" and away from me toward a huge hay field. I caught up to him in a woods just before the field and called him back to about 60 yards, but his girlfriends had different ideas and took him off into the field.

They were headed to a corner of the field that is on a high spot, where birds strut A LOT. I could have looped and gotten ahead of him, with and excellent chance of killing him, but had to listen to him gobble over my shoulder as I walked away and headed to work

I went back this afternoon and made a good bow set-up. If I roost him in the same spot tonight I'll be waiting for him in the morning, hoping he does the same thing again.

Of course he may be dead, because I heard 2 gunshots on the neighboring property just as I was leaving this afternoon.

I LOVE PLAYING THIS GAME!!!!!

I can't wait to get up there and chase them around with you. I will call you when we are on the way. Good luck between now and then.

We need to get a trip out west trip or an Osceola trip together for Spring. I am doing one or the other just not sure which yet. I may be going to NE next week if it all pans out. Our "guide" for MI filled his tag this morning so maybe he will be willing to share a couple birds with us now. :)

He's still alive, I chased him the next day. He was headed for my set-up where I was waiting with my bow, but a tractor pulled into the field and that was that.

We'll start there in the morning. I'm guessing that bird is gonna get a ride south before it's all over :D

We were preparing to leave Murfreesboro when Jimmy got sick, REALLY SICK !! There was no way that he could make the trip as bad as he was at the time. We had to put it off and never had another chance to go. I dont know when he'll be able to try it again but i'm going next yr reguardless.
I have a lot of info and good leeds on where to hunt on WMA ground. Talked to a Biologist and his game warden wife in person for a long time. They told us where to go and when.
Unless i can find a better place on private ground, i'll go back with that plan.
