Monday, my season opener, I got on one that was closer to the field edge than normal, so I couldn't get between him in the tree and where he wanted to strut. He gobbled once after fly-down before I had to leave at 7:30 so I could be to work at 8:00.
This morning I got on 2 gobbling their heads off on the roost. One shut up after fly-down, and the other continued to carry on. I set up in a spot that made a good bow set-up, but only gave me a marginal chance to call him up, rather than in the spot I would have set up with a gun. He gobbled consistently as he walked right through the "gun spot" and away from me toward a huge hay field. I caught up to him in a woods just before the field and called him back to about 60 yards, but his girlfriends had different ideas and took him off into the field.
They were headed to a corner of the field that is on a high spot, where birds strut A LOT. I could have looped and gotten ahead of him, with and excellent chance of killing him, but had to listen to him gobble over my shoulder as I walked away and headed to work
I went back this afternoon and made a good bow set-up. If I roost him in the same spot tonight I'll be waiting for him in the morning, hoping he does the same thing again.
Of course he may be dead, because I heard 2 gunshots on the neighboring property just as I was leaving this afternoon.
I LOVE PLAYING THIS GAME!!!!!
